In south Florida, the predominant autism interventions are behavioral. Focused on repetition, rewards, consequences, and breaking tasks into small steps.
Developmental and relationship based approaches are beginning to gain momentum however! This spring, two awesome and nationally respected workshops are coming to south Florida, including DIR 101 presented by ICDL, and the PLAY Project approach to early intervention.
Both workshops will focus on the importance of engagement over repetition, focus on passions, understanding the experience of each individual child, interacting at the right level, and the necessity for learning to be meaningful and experience based. This is a big leap for south Florida- let's show we're ready to do things the RIGHT way by showing up and spreading the word!!
Time to get some effective approaches working consistently across south Florida!
